06.10.2023

On 30 September 2023, President of Turkmenistan, H.E. Mr Serdar Berdimuhamedov signed the Law on the accession of Turkmenistan to the Basic Multilateral Agreement on International Transport for Development of the Europe-the Caucasus-Asia Corridor (hereinafter referred to as the MLA), adopted on 8 September 1998 in the city of Baku.

It should be noted that the process of Turkmenistan’s accession to the MLA began a long time ago and over the years many efforts have been made by TRACECA in this direction.

This important historical event emphasizes Turkmenistan’s desire to strengthen transport links and develop logistics chains between Asia and Europe, which in turn will become a strong basis for fruitful cooperation between Turkmenistan and other MLA member states.

The participation of Turkmenistan as a full member of TRACECA will provide an opportunity to consistently and actively take steps to strengthen its status as the most important transport hub in the region.

In accordance with the procedure established by the MLA itself, the Basic Agreement comes into force for the acceding States 30 days after depositing the documents on accession with the Depositary - the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan.  Accordingly, in the very near future Turkmenistan will officially become the 14th full member of TRACECA. The corresponding notification to the MLA member states will also be sent by the Depositary through diplomatic channels.
