TRACECA participated in discussions on the future of the Middle Corridor: Ministerial Roundtable within COP29

On November 20, 2024, in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Permanent Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Commission TRACECA (PS IGC TRACECA), represented by the Secretary General, Mr. Asset Assavbayev, participated in the Ministerial Roundtable on "Sustainable and Digital Middle Corridor and beyond". The Ministerial Roundtable was organized by the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport of the Republic of Azerbaijan, with the support of the UNECE and UNESCAP, within the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

This event brought together Ministers from Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Romania, Türkiye, leading representatives of the global transport sector, as well as heads of international transport, financial and regional organizations – TRACECA, OSJD, ITF, IRU, providing a platform for international dialogue on sustainable and digital development of transport corridors all over the world.

As part of the constructive exchange of views, the issue of modernization of the Middle Corridor connecting Asia with Europe through a seamless and environmentally safe transit network became a key subject of discussion. During the discussions, the importance of developing and turning the Middle Corridor into a sustainable, efficient and digital transport route capable of meeting the urgent needs of the region was noted.

During his address, the Secretary General highlighted two important elements towards achieving the above-mentioned goal: the continuous development of infrastructure and the improvement of digital connectivity and electronic data exchange. "Both steps — improving infrastructure and digital connectivity are crucial for easing the increasing pressures on our transport systems. I believe that together we will pave the way for seamless transit and interoperability, because coordination at the international level is not just beneficial, it is essential for creating a sustainable future for transport."

Following the meeting, the participants recognized the priority areas that require further study for the development of the Middle Corridor. Among them, improving infrastructure sustainability and reducing bottlenecks; improving digital connectivity and data exchange; development of regional cooperation and partnership, etc. should be noted.

In his turn, Mr. A. Assavbayev assured the meeting participants of TRACECA's readiness to take an active part in the implementation of the tasks set: "The Permanent Secretariat stands ready to collaborate with each of you to further enhance interregional connectivity."
