TRACECA is an honoured guest at COP29, the UN International Conference on Climate Change

The conference traditionally brings together the world leaders, ministers, high-level delegations, and representatives of international organizations, providing a large-scale platform for the exchange of views and strategies for finding solutions to climate challenges and developing an environmentally sustainable economy, which underlines its importance not only for environmental organizations, but also for the international community as a whole.

Within the opening of the Leaders' Summit, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Mr Ilham Aliyev and the UN Secretary-General, Mr António Guterres welcomed the heads of state and government, heads of delegations, and distinguished guests participating in the summit.

In his speech, the President of Azerbaijan noted the global significance of climate change issues in the world. “As the President of COP29, Azerbaijan will do its best to find a common understanding between developed and developing countries, between the Global South and the Global North. We can build political, cultural, energy, trade, and transportation bridges between different international actors. The mega projects initiated by Azerbaijan have already changed the energy and transportation maps of Eurasia and have led to the establishment of fruitful multinational cooperation formats.”

As one of the representatives of the international transport community, TRACECA actively supports efforts to expand cooperation and ensure a sustainable future within the framework of the global climate agenda.

During this conference, Mr Assavbayev A. got acquainted with the pavilions of TRACECA member countries, which represent their national climate initiatives and environmental projects in the Europe-Caucasus-Asia region.

Along with this, the Secretary General took part in the high-level event of Tajikistan "Glaciers' 2025: Taking Global Action on Glaciers' Preservation", aimed at drawing attention to the necessity to preserve glaciers and implement appropriate measures towards this objective.

The participation of representatives of various international and regional organizations, including TRACECA, among high-level delegations demonstrates the importance of the presence of key figures in such high-level discussions, promoting integrative interaction, the formation of a common position on sustainable development issues and support for global initiatives.

• The COP29 agenda includes the current situation in the fight against global warming and other important issues on the agenda related to climate change. One of the main areas of discussion is the establishment of fair targets for climate finance. The COP29 Presidency put forward 14 initiatives covering sustainable development and emission reduction issues, including the creation of green energy corridors and technologies, the development of clean hydrogen and green digital infrastructure.
  
  

• The opening ceremony of the 29th Session was led by the COP28 President, Sultan Al Jaber, officially handing over the presidency of the climate summit from the United Arab Emirates to Azerbaijan and declaring the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Mukhtar Babayev, as the President of COP29.
  
  

• COP29 will continue its work until 22 November 2024, within the framework of which a Ministerial Roundtable on the theme “A Sustainable and Digital Middle Corridor and Beyond” is planned.
