TRACECA and Latvia: discussion of the possibility obtaining observer status in the Intergovernmental Commission TRACECA by Latvia

On October 31, 2023, a delegation from Latvia consisting of Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport of Latvia - Mr. Uldis Reimanis, Director of the Transport Logistics Department - Mr. Andris Maldups, Chairman of Board of the Latvian Stevedoring Company Association - Ms. Elina Strodaha, and Vice President of airline company airBaltic - Ms. Svetlana Abaskina, visited the Headquarters of the PS IGC TRACECA.

The objective of the meeting was to strengthen the transport dialogue, identify further steps for cooperation within the framework of the implementation of TRACECA initiatives of interest to Latvia.  
Mr. Asset Assavbayev, Secretary General of the PS IGC TRACECA, familiarized the meeting participants with the current status of the initiatives, paying particular attention to the transportation to/from Latvia via TRACECA corridor.

During the meeting, Mr. Uldis Reimanis noted that Latvia is interested in obtaining the status of an observer country in the Intergovernmental Commission TRACECA in the near future upon completion of internal procedures.
 
The parties also exchanged views on the results of the first pilot transportation of goods by semi-trailers, held in May-June of this year along the TRACECA multimodal route, and agreed on the need to further deepen cooperation.
 
On the outcomes of discussions, the parties agreed to identify specific areas of cooperation and actively work on deepening relations in the TRACECA-Latvia format.

• 2 countries have observer status in the IGC TRACECA: Lithuania since 2009 and Greece since 2018.
