Course on places of refuge

The European Union (EU) funded TRACECA Maritime Safety and Security II Project within its activities 4.4 organised a Course on places of refuge.

This Course was organised in Kiev, Ukraine, from Wednesday 11 May to Thursday 12 May 2016.

The presentations of the speakers and discussions were focussed on the assessment of the effective application of existing regulations and recommendations (i.e. EU Directive 2002/59 establishing a Community vessel traffic monitoring and information system, and in particular article 20 on places of refuge making reference to IMO guidelines).

The following issues were discussed within the seminar:

- setting up a system for granting refuge

- requesting a place of refuge

- granting a place of refuge

- relevant EU Guidelines and support services offered

- national implementation (case studies Bulgaria and Romania)
