November 26: World Sustainable Transport Day

On November 24, 2023, in Geneva, the World Sustainable Transport Day is celebrated for the first time under the auspices of the UNECE.

This event, organized in cooperation with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, served as a platform for the exchange of best practices and ideas in the field of sustainable transport by representatives of countries, organizations and transport industry leaders from around the world.
 
Mr. Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General, Mr. Li Junhua, UN DESA Deputy Secretary-General, and Ms. Tatiana Molcean, Deputy Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the UNECE welcomed the participants.

At the high-level events, within the panel discussions and speeches, important aspects of the transport industry with special emphasis on three key topics were discussed. In particular, how transport impacts everyday life, what is the role of transport in ensuring security and what is the contribution of transport to the climate change agenda.

As part of this historic event, Mr. A.A. Assavbayev, the Secretary General of the PS IGC TRACECA welcomed all participants of the meeting and told in his speech about the role of transport in everyday life. "I believe that we can achieve our goals only with joint efforts, strengthening of coordination and synergies in our transport related projects, among all relevant international organizations, in partnership between government organizations and private sector," he noted.

During the event, the UN e–learning platform on sustainable inland transport and Trade relations – LearnITC were presented to the participants. This e-learning platform aims to develop the capacity of its users to implement sustainable transport and trade relations policies by expanding the knowledge and skills base of stakeholders regarding UN legal instruments on inland transport and trade.

- Recognizing the important role of safe, affordable, accessible, and sustainable transport systems for all in promoting sustainable economic growth, improving people's social well-being and enhancing international cooperation and trade between countries, the General Assembly decided to declare November 26 as World Sustainable Transport Day.

- The General Assembly invited all interested parties to commemorate the World Day of Sustainable Transport by carrying out educational work and activities aimed at increasing public knowledge in the field of sustainable transport, in particular on building intermodal transport links, promoting the development of environmentally friendly transport, the formation of socially inclusive transport infrastructure and other aspects of sustainable transport.
