Strengthening the transport dialogue at the international level is one of the priority areas of TRACECA's activities

On May 24-26, 2023, the Secretary General of the PS IGC TRACECA participated at the ITF Summit on Transport Enabling Sustainable Economies, held in Leipzig (Germany) under the Presidency of the United Kingdom.

The Summit was attended by ministers of transport from different countries, heads of international organizations, politicians, representatives of business associations, leading researchers, stakeholders, etc. The participants shared their views on the role of transport as an enabler of economic growth that also drives environmental and social sustainability.
Promoting inclusive access and tackling poverty; fostering transport for economic growth and stability; boosting sustainable economies through greening transport and building safe, healthy and resilient transport systems were the key topics of the Summit 2023.
Within the framework of the Open Ministerial Session on the topic "Boosting sustainable economies through greening transport", held on May 25, 2023, the Secretary General of TRACECA, Mr. Assavbayev A.A. informed about the TRACECA current initiatives and focused on the need for further development of maritime communications in the Caspian and Black Seas with an emphasis on piggyback transportation and transportation of goods in semi-trailers in order to reduce emissions. In addition, the Secretary General highlighted that it is important to modernize the fleet to use more environmentally friendly fuel types.
Parallel events, panel sessions and round tables were organized within the framework of the Summit, which provided participants with more opportunities to present their work and have dialogue on key issues complementing the Summit topic, in particular decarbonization of transport and reduction of other environmental impacts of transport, such as its impact on biodiversity, air and sea quality, as well as health, transport as an enabler of sustainable economies, peace and stability in times of crisis, resilient supply chains: preparing for and recovering from major disruptions to transport systems, etc.

For reference:
The International Transport Forum at the OECD is an intergovernmental organisation with 64-member countries. It acts as a think tank for transport policy and organises the Annual Summit of Transport Ministers. ITF is the only global body that covers all transport modes.
The International Transport Forum Summit is the world's largest gathering of transport ministers and the premier global transport policy event.
In 2025-2026, the Presidency of the International Transport Forum (ITF) will be transferred from Lithuania to Azerbaijan.
