On 18-19 April 2016, in Bangkok (Thailand), in the Headquarters of UN ESCAP there was held II Meeting of the Working Group on Railway Transport organized by CAREC together with the UN ESCAP

The Meeting was attended by the delegations from CAREC member states, including Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Mongolia, China, Pakistan, as well as the Georgian Railways, the representatives of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), International Union of Railways (UIC) and other organizations.

The meeting discussed the issues concerning the implementation of CAREC Strategy on transport and trade facilitation up to 2020 as regards railways, further steps on the development and approval of the Action Plan and other subjects voiced during the previous Meeting of the Working Group on Railway Transport.   

In the course of the Meeting the presentations were made by the representatives of member states, as well as partners from international organizations. The presentations included relevant recommendations regarding the improvement of the Strategy and achievement of sustainable results.

A number of delegations from CAREC countries put forward new project ideas to be included in the activities of the organization, discussions touched upon the procedures for identification of railway corridors schemes in accordance with the earlier approved criteria.

The PS IGC TRACECA was represented at experts’ level. The Permanent Secretariat delivered its presentation emphasizing the necessity of improving institutional and infrastructure components of international corridors which pass through CAREC countries.

Within the framework of the Meeting there were discussed the issues concerning regional development, the participants exchanged useful ideas.

On the results of the Meeting the delegates of the member states adopted final conclusions on the necessity to continue the activity regarding transport sector improvement, successful development of suggested projects, and livening up the work on the implementation of CAREC Strategy.
