A new era of cooperation in the Silk Road region will give impetus for all involved partners

On 13-14 March 2018 international conference of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly (PA) Silk Road Support Group on the role of parliamentarians in boosting economic cooperation and cultural ties along the Silk Road kicked off in Baku.

The conference included the participation of high-level members of the OSCE PA, along with a number of foreign ministers, speakers of parliament and heads of international organizations.

Within the Opening Ceremony of the conference Mr. George Tsereteli, President of the OSCE PA, Mr. Ivan Brajović, Head of Montenegro’s Delegation to the OSCE PA, Mr. Elmar Mammadyarov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Damdin Tsogtbaatar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia; Head of the Delegation of Mongolia to the OSCE PA; Ms. Bahar Muradova, Vice-Chair of the Milli Mejlis and head of Azerbaijani delegation to the OSCEPA, Mr. Azay Guliyev, Vice-President of the OSCEPA, Mr. Asaf Hajiyev, Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (PABSEC), Mr. Asaf Hajiyev, Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation, Mr. Mircea Ciopraga, Secretary General of the Permanent Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Commission TRACECA, and Mr. Wei Jinghua, Chinese Ambassador to Azerbaijan delivered speeches at the conference.  

The mentioned event featured several panel meetings on the strengthening of economic and trade relations, facilitation of transport and logistics procedures, and promotion of cultural exchange and dialogue in Silk Road region. 

Participants of the meeting underlined the essential role of the countries involved to the collaboration for the idea of reviving the ancient Silk Road and practical development of the New Silk Road particularly needs of legislative support, various inter-parliamentary platforms, that creates opportunities to contribute to this process.

During the opening speech, Mr. Ciopraga stressed that the essence of collaborative partnership for all parties is to mutually benefit from working together and be actively involved to events of high-level international importance bringing o knowledge and experience gathered over the years by all member countries. 

Coordination of activities of related programs and organizations contributes to more effective implementation of tasks, avoids duplication of efforts, optimizes the use of resources and focuses on the implementation of the most priority and realistic projects, as well as harmonizes the decisions of an imperative nature.

In this regard, TRACECA suggests mutually beneficial cooperation to the Silk Road Support Group of the OSCE PA. 

The Conference ended with adoption of the Declaration and, whole involved delegations supported the efforts to strengthen financial integration along the Silk Road in order to facilitate free, fair, and transparent circulation of capital, for funding major sustainable infrastructural projects of the new Silk Road of the 21st century.

The OSCE PA Silk Road Support Group was established on the initiative of Azerbaijan. Initially consisting of 17 countries, the group now has 22 member states.
