TRACECA participated in the 87th session of the Inland Transport Committee of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE)
On 11 February 2025, the 87th session of the UNECE Inland Transport Committee (ITC) started its work in Geneva, which marks the mid-point of the implementation of the Strategy until 2030 adopted in 2019.
The session brought together representatives of more than 20 countries, including Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Türkiye, as well as European Union states such as Germany, France, Italy, representatives of international organisations and businesses to discuss relevant issues in the field of transport policy, economic cooperation and sustainable development of the transport sector.
The high-level segment dedicated to “Successes and Challenges for Inland Transport on the Road to 2030”, included two Ministerial Roundtables led by the Netherlands on climate actions and led by Türkiye on Connectivity. This segment examined the role of the ITC, its contribution, achievements and challenges in implementing the Strategy and advancing inland transport objectives.
The agenda included most important issues for further development of transport policy and infrastructure improvements.
In particular, during the meeting, participants discussed a number of current topics, including sustainability of transport systems, road safety, and integration of environmentally friendly solutions into the transport sector. The outcome of the discussions will serve as a basis for the formation of long-term strategies and recommendations aimed at improving transport services and reducing environmental impact.
Within the framework of the high-level session TRACECA presented key initiatives aimed at developing transport corridors between Europe, the Caucasus and Asia, as well as at improving the integration of these regions through efficient and sustainable transport networks.
In his speech Mr. Asset Assavbayev, Secretary General of the PS IGC TRACECA, stressed that TRACECA is also in the process of developing the Strategy for 2027-2036, which should be closely aligned with the long-term plans of countries and international organizations. “I urge all of you to work together to define our common goals, then identify key bottlenecks and infrastructure priorities. Only through stronger cooperation and a harmonized approach we can unlock the full potential of our transport corridors and promote sustainable regional and interregional connectivity.”- Mr. Assavbayev noted.
The contribution of all UNECE member States to the formation of a common transport policy aimed at improving the quality of life and ensuring sustainable development in Europe was highlighted.
It is expected that in the following days of the session proposals on specific measures and initiatives that can ensure further progress in these areas will be considered.
