Ukraine makes efforts to maintain transport dialogue: discussions on cooperation within the framework of TRACECA
On October 15, 2024, at the Embassy of Ukraine in Baku, Azerbaijan, a bilateral meeting of the Secretary General of the Permanent Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Commission TRACECA (the PS IGC TRACECA), Mr. Asset Assavbayev, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Yuriy Husyev, was held.
The purpose of this meeting was to discuss key areas of cooperation between the PS IGC TRACECA and Ukraine, as well as to explore opportunities for further promotion of joint projects aimed at developing of the transport corridor Europe-the Caucasus-Asia.
The Parties discussed the “bottlenecks” of the TRACECA corridor routes, in particular, the difficulties occurring in ferry transportation across the Caspian Sea. It was noted that “improving ferry communication requires a coordinated and concerted approach from all interested Parties.” In this regard, special attention should be paid to the implementation of the Action Plan developed by the PS IGC TRACECA, which covers both multilateral and local measures to improve connectivity in the Caspian Sea.
One of the key issues was the discussion of the status of the draft Agreement on Single Transit Permit of TRACECA (STP), which is at the stage of intrastate coordination of interested Parties. Ukraine is one of the first countries to express its readiness to sign this document, which demonstrates its active participation in regional integration processes and the desire to strengthen the country's transit potential.
The Secretary General, Mr. A. Assavbayev, also informed the Ambassador about the completion of the second virtual testing within the framework of the pilot project on the use of the electronic CIM/SMGS consignment note. The Secretary General expressed gratitude to the Ukrainian side for its active participation in this project since its launch and stressed the importance of continuing joint work in this direction.
The key aspects of the meeting Agenda were also the issues of searching for new logistics solutions and strengthening export and transit potential, as well as issue of sustainable development of the region was touched upon.
The meeting held emphasized the constant readiness of the PS IGC TRACECA for an open and productive dialogue with the representatives of the member countries in order to strengthen regional cooperation, meeting the interests of all TRACECA participating countries.
