Successful Pilot Project testing of the use of eCIM/SMGS Consignment Note along TRACECA Corridor

16.07.2024

As a significant step towards modernizing and streamlining international railway transport, a testing of the digital prototype of the electronic CIM/SMGS consignment note (eCIM/SMGS CN) has been successfully conducted. This collaborative initiative marks a major milestone in the digitization of freight documentation, enhancing efficiency and interoperability across multiple countries.

The pilot project, supported by the Organisation for Co-operation between Railways (OSJD), International Rail Transport Committee (CIT), International Union of Railways (UIC), and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), brought together railway operators from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Türkiye and Ukraine. The first virtual testing of the eCIM/SMGS CN digital prototype was conducted from June 3 to June 7, 2024.

This initiative follows the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on May 22, 2023, between the participating railway operators to jointly advance the use of electronic consignment notes along selected TRACECA routes. The digital prototype aligns with global UN/CEFACT standards and the Multimodal Transport Reference Data Model (MMT RDM), ensuring compatibility and facilitating seamless integration.

The initial virtual testing involved the exchange of 20 electronic consignment note messages among the five participating railway operators. This phase demonstrated the capability of the digital prototype to enhance the automation and accuracy of freight documentation processes, paving the way for increased efficiency and reduced errors in international railway logistics.

Key findings from the testing highlighted the potential for significant improvements in data exchange and processing, with recommendations for further refinement of the digital prototype to simplify its structure and enhance compatibility. The successful implementation of this pilot project is expected to lead to broader adoption of digital consignment notes, benefiting international trade and logistics.

The successful testing of the eCIM/SMGS CN digital prototype represents a crucial advancement in our efforts to modernize railway transport. This initiative not only streamlines operations but also sets a precedent for future digitalization efforts across the transport sector.

The project partners will continue to refine the digital prototype and expand the pilot project activities, with further testing phases and consultations planned for later in 2024. The ultimate goal is to achieve full implementation of electronic consignment notes, fostering greater efficiency and interoperability in international railway transport.
