New opportunities of the port of Poti: opening of multimodal container terminal

On June 9, 2025, the opening ceremony of the new multimodal container terminal of JSC Poti TransTerminal took place in the port of Poti.

The opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Guram Guramishvili, Deputy Chairman of the Committee of Railway and Water Transport of the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan Kassym Telepov, Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Georgia Malik Murzalin, Secretary General of the PS IGC TRACECA Asset Assavbayev, as well as representatives of China and Azerbaijan and other invited representatives.

The new facility has become an important link in the development of the international transport routes of the TRACECA corridor, as well as in strengthening the export-import potential of the region.

The investors from Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Georgia participated in the project. The construction was carried out from February 2024 to May 2025 with the financial support of Halyk Bank of Georgia.

The investment value of the project is 31.5 million US dollars. The terminal is located near the port of Poti, covering more than 9 hectares. With its annual operation, in the first phase, it will contain more than 80,000 containers. The terminal will serve up to 120 railcars at a time, with a staff of over 100 people. The terminal will serve both international and local shipments. It will also be used to handle cargo for regional purposes to Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia.

During the opening of the new terminal in Poti, the Secretary General of the PS IGC TRACECA Asset Assavbayev made a welcoming speech, noting the importance of this facility in Europe-the Caucasus-Asia transport region. “The geographical position of Poti makes it an important link on this strategic route. The new terminal, due to its multimodal nature, significantly expands our capabilities in cargo handling and transshipment”, he emphasized.
