New horizons of cooperation between TRACECA and UN-OHRLLS

A bilateral meeting between Mr Asset Assavbayev, Secretary General the PS IGC TRACECA and Ms Rabab Fatima, Under-Secretary General of UN, High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) was held on May 9, 2025 at the UN Headquarters (New York, USA).

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the prospects of cooperation between TRACECA and UN-OHRLLS, significance of transport corridors for the development of landlocked countries and increasing their integration into global economy.

As part of exchange of views, Mr A. Assavbayev informed about the priority TRACECA initiatives aimed at developing the international transport communication within the transport corridor Europe-the Caucasus-Asia. The Agenda items included the development of a new TRACECA Strategy for 2027–2036 with the active involvement of all countries participating in the corridor, the introduction of the electronic railway CIM/SMGS consignment note, accelerating logistics processes in the corridor countries, the development of ferry service across the Caspian Sea, the launch of the Agreement on a Single Transit Permit of TRACECA and other issues.

The key item of the Agenda was the implementation of the new Programme of Action for Landlocked Developing Countries for the Decade 2024–2034, adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 2024. This Programme highlights the role of transport corridors in achieving sustainable development of landlocked countries.

The Parties confirmed their readiness to conduct joint practical activities in order to achieve tangible results in increasing connectivity, sustainability and strengthening the transport dialogue between the countries of the TRACECA and UN-OHRLLS region.

  • 8 of 14 TRACECA countries are also members of UN-OHRLLS (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan).
