Chairmanship of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the IGC TRACECA: new initiatives and perspectives for the region

On 09 April 2025 at the Headquarters of the Permanent Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Commission TRACECA the meeting of Mr. Asset Assavbayev, Secretary General of the PS IGC TRACECA with H.E. Ms. Farzaneh Sadegh, Minister of Roads and Urban Development of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Chairman of the IGC TRACECA, took place.

During the meeting the sides emphasised the importance of continuing close interaction and deepening cooperation, outlined the key areas of activities during the IRI Chairmanship in the IGC TRACECA.

Noting the role of the IRI as one of the strategic players in the region, Mr. Asset Assavbayev, Secretary General of the PS IGC TRACECA, stressed the significance of raising awareness of the TRACECA member countries about the existing and new transit opportunities of the IRI.

The Roadmap for the development of routes of the ITC Europe-the Caucasus-Asia (TRACECA), elaboration of the Strategy for 2027-2036, introduction of digital electronic permits were of paramount importance during discussions and among the Agenda issues.

The sides reaffirmed their commitment to promote regional transport initiatives in order to attract new freight flows and expand the transit potential of the region, including cargo transportation along Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Azerbaijan (Nakhchivan) and Türkiye, within the joint TRACECA-IRU work.

H.E. Ms. Farzaneh Sadegh, Minister of Roads and Urban Development of the IRI, noted that Azerbaijan-Iran Business Forum is planned to be held in the nearest future, and TRACECA is also invited to participate in this event as a key partner. This forum will serve as an important platform for dialogue between business representatives and subsequently potential investors from the countries of the region.

The Secretary General assured the Minister that the Permanent Secretariat will make all possible efforts to ensure a productive and efficient period of the Iran's Chairmanship.

At the end of the meeting the sides expressed their mutual gratitude for the constructive dialogue and confirmed their readiness for further cooperation within TRACECA.
