PS IGC TRACECA Took Part in Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW 2026)
From 7 to 11 September 2026, the Baku Congress Center hosted Baku Climate Action Week BCAW 2026 – a key regional platform for dialogue, partnership and the implementation of climate initiatives as part of the development of the legacy of COP29 and ahead of COP31.
The Permanent Secretariat of the IGC TRACECA took part in the business programme of BCAW 2026, expressing its support for the digitalisation of transport corridors, trade facilitation, and the introduction of environmentally sustainable (“green”) transport principles. Throughout the week, leading experts, representatives of government bodies, international development institutions and the private sector discussed practical solutions on key areas of the climate agenda.
During the sessions dedicated to the introduction of AI and the implementation of Green Digital Action solutions, participants emphasised the critical importance of the transition to paperless technologies, the automation of procedures, and the reduction of the carbon footprint of transport and logistics infrastructure. Alongside this, issues of multimodal connectivity and regional cooperation were considered, including the integration of renewable energy sources, the transformation of port and railway hubs into sustainable logistics clusters, as well as the climate adaptation of infrastructure in the Caspian region. Experts placed particular emphasis on climate financing, the development of carbon markets, the use of cross-border renewable energy certificates (RECs), and the facilitation of investment in sustainable transport arteries.
Representatives of TRACECA confirmed the Secretariat's commitment to promoting unified digital ecosystems (including UN/CEFACT standards and Maritime Single Window) and to minimising cargo dwell time at borders, which directly contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions along the entire Europe-the Caucasus-Asia corridor.
Particular attention within the UNFCCC Climate Week 4 (CW4) – Implementation Forum was given to issues of information integrity: a session titled “Upholding Information Integrity on Climate Change and the Impact of AI” (Implementation Lab) was held, dedicated to countering misinformation in the field of climate change and the role of artificial intelligence as a tool for enhancing data transparency.
During the discussions and the Q&A session, Mr. Vadim Ponomarenko, Head of Policy Development and Monitoring Division of the Permanent Secretariat of the IGC TRACECA, noted the growing challenges of verifying digital content amid the development of generative AI and emphasised their direct link to the digitalisation of logistics processes, where there is a growing need for reliable mechanisms to verify the authenticity of data between member countries and carriers. As a practical initiative, it was proposed to consider the possibility of creating a single trusted tool for the independent verification of the authenticity of digital materials in supply chains.
