Latvia obtained the status of observer country in the Intergovernmental Commission TRACECA
On 17 April 2025 within the framework of the official meeting Mr. Asset Assavbayev, Secretary General of the PS IGC TRACECA met with Mr. Edgars Skuja, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Azerbaijan. During the meeting the current and prospective TRACECA projects, as well as transport potential and possibilities of Latvia as an observer country in the IGC TRACECA were discussed.

Plans for digitalisation of transport agreements, creation of a system to improve logistics processes and development of the ferry concept on the Caspian Sea were discussed. Implementation of e-CIM/SMGS consignment note pilot project, introduction of digital (electronic) permits, TRACECA Fund, Agreement on a Single Transit Permit of TRACECA, elaboration of Strategy of the IGC TRACECA for development of the ITC Europe-the Caucasus-Asia for 2027-2036 and other topics were among the Agenda items.
During the meeting the possibilities of participation of the observer countries in the TRACECA Fund, the objective of which is to support and develop projects aimed at facilitation of international trade and transport of goods, were also considered.
Within the exchange of views, the Secretary General noted that following the IGC Meeting in Tehran (Iran), Greece extended its observer status in the IGC TRACECA, which is confirmed by its interest and involvement in the TRACECA activities.
Mr. Assavbayev pointed out the importance of Latvia's participation in connection with its new status and as a potential partner of TRACECA, expressing interest in attracting Latvian carriers for further expansion of transport routes thus developing not only the region between Asia and Europe, Caspian and Black Seas, but also the Baltic region.
Thus, Secretary General Assavbayev shared the results of the pilot project of cargo transportation by semi-trailers along the multimodal route Lithuania - Poland - Slovakia - Hungary - Romania - Bulgaria - Black Sea - Georgia - Azerbaijan - Caspian Sea - Kazakhstan. The project became possible thanks to the support of the authorised transport ministries of Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Lithuania, as well as with the active involvement of customs authorities and the seaports of Varna, Batumi, Baku and Kuryk.
Following the results of the meeting, the sides outlined priorities for further cooperation.
